BRONX-Residents along Rhinlander Avenue in Morris Park are on the look out for a man with an ax, after the still-unknown assailant chopped down a recently planted tree.

Residents say they first thought it was done by Con Edison, who had been working in the area, but now believe it is a young man with emotional problems who lives in the area.

Residents were particularly concerned because the incident dealt with an ax and the targeted tree was across the street from St. Clare of Assisi School.

Bronx Stands Up to Hate

Bronx Stands Up to Hate
BRONX- Senator Jeff Klein, Council Member Andrew Cohen and the Fieldston Property Homeowners Association hosted an Anti-Hate Forum Monday night at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School.

An eight-member panel comprised of the elected officials, educational, religious and community leaders led a discussion on religious tolerance and acceptance to our youth in light of a recent anti-Semitic hate crime in Fieldston where a teen was arrested for the incident. The teen is accused of writing anti-Semitic words on a Bronx house.

“Any act of anti-Semitism is appalling and inexcusable, but when perpetrated by minors it is our duty to educate our youth on religious acceptance and tolerance. What happened in Fieldston last month is heartbreaking on many fronts. On Monday night we sent a message that hate will not be tolerated, and it’s my hope this educational forum will help deter any future hate crimes against this community,” said Senator Jeff Klein.

“We cannot tolerate any act of hatred in our community,” said Council Member Andrew Cohen. “It is important that we come together to take a strong stand against hatred, especially in light of the act of anti-Semitism that occurred last month in Fieldston. I thank all the community leaders who participated to educate our youth on kindness and tolerance.”

"With all the inflammatory rhetoric out there today, it is critically important for communities to come together and stand united against hate. I'm proud to join my colleagues in government and members of the community in saying we reject bigotry and intolerance. We are all Americans, united as one," said Congressman Eliot Engel.

In addition to stressing the importance of religious acceptance, Senator Klein highlighted legislation aimed at combatting hate crimes. Following the chilling rash of bomb threats to Jewish Community Centers (JCCs) last winter, Senator Klein and the Independent Democratic Conference introduced the Religious Freedom Package. One of the pieces of IDC legislation in the package addresses the Fieldston hate crime. The bill would create a specified offense for graffiti making as a hate crime. Currently graffiti vandalism is a misdemeanor, but the bill would elevate it to a felony if it’s made to target a person’s race,  color, national origin, ancestry, gender, religion, religious practice, age, disability or sexual orientation.

The first incident happened at 7:40 am on October 10 at Valentine Avenue and 192nd Street. One of the muggers walked up to a 15-year-old, displayed a knife and demanded the teen’s headphones. The teen gave up the item and the suspect fled.

A half hour later the thief struck again this time with some success. He ran up to a 14-year-old at the same location. Displaying a knife he demanded cash. The teen handed over $3.

Bronx Man Charged with Pimping Out Minors

Bronx Man Charged with Pimping Out Minors

Hawked Sex in Ads

CRIME- A brazen pimp advertised his girls in ads loaded with coded wording that indicated sex for sale, prosceutors said. Feds have charged the man with sex trafficking minors.

ADRIAN BROOKS, a/k/a “Abee,” was arrested for his alleged role as the leader of a sex trafficking and prostitution enterprise that exploited and abused women and minor girls. BROOKS was charged in an Indictment with sex trafficking of minors and sex trafficking by force, fraud, and coercion. BROOKS was also charged with the use of interstate facilities and interstate travel to promote a prostitution enterprise.
BROOKS was arrested this morning and will be presented before U.S. Magistrate Judge Gorenstein in Manhattan federal court this afternoon.  The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge William H. Pauley.

Acting Manhattan U.S. Attorney Joon H. Kim said: “As alleged, Adrian Brooks used threats and violence to coerce underaged girls into performing sex acts for money, and then kept most of the money for himself. For his reprehensible alleged crimes, Brooks will now face federal sex trafficking charges. This Office remains committed to protecting vulnerable children from the sick world of commercial sex trafficking.”

FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge William F. Sweeney Jr. said: “Brooks’s alleged acts are horrendous, preying on and exploiting minors. Cases like this are disgraceful examples of the worst in our society. Sadly, too often these types of crimes are unknown or ignored in our communities. The FBI simply won't tolerate this behavior. Our Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force will be relentless in pursuing those who target our youth.  I encourage anyone with knowledge of trafficking activity to step forward to help us make a difference”

According to the allegations in the Indictment[1] filed in Manhattan federal court:

Since at least 2014, BROOKS directed and conducted a criminal sex trafficking and prostitution enterprise (the “Sex Trafficking Enterprise”) that recruited and exploited minor girls, and then forced them to engage in commercial sex acts for his own profit by, among other things, using an online classifieds website called Backpage.com (“Backpage”).  BROOKS operated the Sex Trafficking Enterprise out of motels in the Bronx, New York, and Yonkers, New York, as well as on the streets of the Bronx.

To evade detection by law enforcement, the Sex Trafficking Enterprise’s advertisements often purported to be offering escorts. However, such advertisements often signaled that they were, in fact, offering individuals for commercial sex acts through a variety of cues, including pictures of partially-clothed women in sexually suggestive poses, and coded language indicating that the people being offered would perform sex acts in exchange for money.

The victims of BROOKS’s Sex Trafficking Enterprise were typically forced to engage in commercial sex acts with multiple customers in a single day. Customers typically paid for such commercial sex acts in cash.  BROOKS kept most or all of the profits from his Sex Trafficking Enterprise.

BROOKS forced certain of his victims to take prescription pain relievers, to which they became addicted. In addition, BROOKS set rules for his victims, controlled their actions, and punished violations of his rules and disobedience through physical violence, among other things.

*                *                *

BROOKS is charged with one count of sex trafficking conspiracy, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison; two counts of sex trafficking of a minor and by force, fraud, or coercion, each of which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison and a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison; and one count of use of interstate facilities and interstate travel to promote a prostitution enterprise, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

The maximum potential sentences in this case are prescribed by Congress and are provided here for informational purposes only, as any sentencing of the defendant will be determined by the judge.

Any individuals who believe they have information concerning ADRIAN BROOKS, a/k/a “Abee,” that may be relevant to the investigation, or information regarding other sex trafficking crimes, should contact the FBI at (212) 384-1000 or https://tips.fbi.gov/, or the New York City Police Department at (646) 610-7272.

The investigation was conducted through the New York Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force, a joint task force between the FBI and NYPD to combat human trafficking.  Mr. Kim praised the outstanding investigative work of the FBI and the NYPD.   Mr. Kim also thanked the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey - Youth Services Unit and the New York City Administration for Children’s Services for their assistance during the investigation.

This case is being handled by the Office’s General Crimes Unit.  Assistant United States Attorneys Elizabeth Hanft, Sagar K. Ravi, and Alexandra N. Rothman are in charge of the prosecution.

The charges contained in the Indictment are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Feds Charge Thief who Stole Cabs

Feds Charge Thief who Stole Cabs

CRIME- A knife-wielding thief, who made off with a driver’s cab, was charged by the feds for a string of robberies throughout the Bronx, Mount Vernon and Yonkers.

Joon H. Kim, the Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced the unsealing of a complaint charging ALLANMON MAVUMKAL with a Hobbs Act robbery spree involving at least 10 livery cabs in the Bronx, Mt. Vernon, and Yonkers, during which MAVUMKAL robbed the cab drivers of cash, personal items, and their cabs at knife-point.

MAVUMKAL surrendered on October 1, 2017, and was presented in Manhattan federal court before the Honorable Gabriel W. Gorenstein.

Acting Manhattan U.S. Attorney Joon H. Kim said: “As alleged, Allanmon Mavumkal preyed on innocent livery cab drivers who had the misfortune of responding to Mavumkal’s call for a ride. Protecting hardworking New Yorkers from acts of violence is always a priority of this Office.”

ATF Special Agent-in-Charge Ashan M. Benedict said:  “Mavumkal is alleged to have engaged in a pattern of armed robberies and carjackings of taxi drivers, extending from the Bronx to Mount Vernon and Yonkers. Over the course of barely a month, he allegedly repeatedly preyed on hard working New Yorkers trying to do nothing more than to earn an honest living. Today’s charges send a clear message that we and our law enforcement partners stand at the ready to bring violent offenders to justice.”

NYPD Commissioner James P. O’Neill said: “This series of violent robberies ended thanks to the hard work of investigators who worked diligently until this individual was identified and taken into custody. The NYPD will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to protect communities and ensure that this individual is held accountable for his actions.”
According to the allegations in the Complaint unsealed in Manhattan federal court:[1]

On September 21, 2017, MAVUMKAL hailed a livery cab in the Bronx, and directed the driver to a particular destination.  After arriving at the drop-off location, MAVUMKAL threatened the driver with a large knife, which was captured on video from the cab, ordered the driver out of the cab, and then drove away in the cab. The investigation is continuing.

MAVUMKAL, 30, of Mount Vernon, New York, is charged with one count of Hobbs Act robbery, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. The maximum potential sentence in this case is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes only, as any sentencing of the defendant will be determined by the judge.

Mr. Kim praised the outstanding investigative work of the ATF and the NYPD.

Bronx Pulls Together to Help Puerto Rico

Bronx Pulls Together to Help Puerto Rico

BRONX- Assemblyman Luis Sepulveda has expressed his gratitude to the hundreds of Bronxites who contributed to the relief effort for Puerto Rico and Mexico.

The donations were loaded and shipped from a central collection point on Aldus Street and Southern Blvd. on Sept. 30.

The collection effort was sponsored by the Hispanic Clergy Coalition, with Borough President Ruben Diaz and Senator Ruben Diaz Sr. coordinating the effort, along with dozens of other electeds, organizations and local schools and churches.

"I want to thank everyone who contributed to this relief effort," said Sepulveda. "My office was jammed with donations. It took a bus, and then some, to get everything to the central collection point, with three shipping containers and 28 truckloads going out from there.

"Engine 64 at the firehouse on Castle Hill Avenue also took in donations, and I was happy to see Mayor de Blasio stop by to show his support.

"We truly are the borough with a heart!”

Russian Beauty Pleads Guilty to Spitzer Shakedown

BRONX- A Russian beauty accused of trying to shakedown the “Luv Gov” pled guilty to petit larceny in a Bronx courtroom.

Svetlana Travis Zakharova, 27, had initially claimed that former Governor Elliot Spitzer roughed her up inside his hotel room at the Plaza. Prosecutors alleged that Zakharova had made up the story and had threatened to go to the press about their affair if Spitzer did not pay her $400,000.

Zakharova pled guilty to attempted petit larceny in relation to a case involving her former lover, a Manhattan toy store owner as well as the Spitzer shakedown. Prosecutors said Zakharova stole money from the toy man to pay for rent owed for a Manhattan apartment.

Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced that Zakharova pled guilty to Attempted Petit Larceny, a misdemeanor, for attempting to steal money from a man.

District Attorney Clark said “We consulted with the victims in this case and they both agreed to the plea agreement reached. The defendant has already served nearly a year in jail.”

Clark said that the defendant, Svetlana Travis Zakharova, 27, a Russian national, pleaded guilty to Attempted Petit Larceny today before Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Charles Solomon and was sentenced to 90 days in jail. A two-year order of protection was issued for the victim. District Attorney Clark’s office handled the case after Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. recused himself.

Stop the Madness of Gun Culture- Pol

Stop the Madness of Gun Culture- Pol

NY Assemblymember Luis Sepulveda issued the following statement on the horrific shooting rampage in Las Vegas.

“My prayers and heartfelt condolences go out to the families of those murdered in the horrific shooting rampage in Las Vegas, and to the surviving victims, for whom I wish a speedy  recovery.

“I also applaud the swift response of the local police. While others flee from danger, they race toward it.

“This obviously was the work of a madman.

Whatever his twisted reasoning, his actions demonstrate once again the unseemly American devotion to a culture of weapons meant for no other major purpose than to inflict massive injuries.

“Yet Congress, held sway by the National Rifle Association, continues to fight any effort to impose reasonable restrictions limiting access to these killing machines.

“When will this nation finally come up with a rational response to the crazy, illogical glorification of these weapons of horrific injury and murder?”

Assemblyman Sepulveda represents the 87th Assembly District covering Parkchester, Castle Hill, West Farms, Van Nest and Stratton Park.
